European Centre-Right LGBT+ Alliance

The European Centre-Right LGBT+ Alliance is a pan European Centre-Right political network comprising Christian Democrat, Conservative and Liberal-Conservative groups. The Alliance gathers organisations that are part of a political party that belongs to the European Peoples’ Party (EPP) such as CDU, CDA and Moderaterna.

The Alliance is an official part of the EPP and is counted as an Associated Entity. This gives the Alliance a platform within the EPP and a seat at important EPP events such as the Congress and the Political Assembly.

The Alliance was founded in Berlin in 2013 by centre-right LGBT+ organisations from Germany and the Nordic countries. The inaugural meeting was held at the CDU headquarters. Over the years the Alliance have grown, and the number of members is today 11 from 10 different countries. The latest additions are organisations from Cyprus and Malta. The Alliance is led by a board consisting of one member per organisation. The first President was Alexander Vogt from LSU in Germany, followed by Fredrik Saweståhl of Öppna Moderater in Sweden and the current President is Helge Ytterøy L’orange from Åpne Høyre in Norway.

The Alliance works primarily with LGBT+ issues in order to advance the rights of LGBT+ persons. This is one through political statements that are published online and also in the press or through news outlets either on the European level or in different languages in members organisations home countries. Contacts with political parties and elected officials such as members of the European Parliaments Intergroup on LGBTI and national members of parliament. Cooperation with the EPP and other members organisations of the EPP, cooperation with other LGBT+ political groups and other LGBT+ groups. The Alliance also has a comprehensive political platform covering a number of recommendations concerning LGBT+ issues aimed at both the European level and the national level.

The Alliance also organises webinars and yearly aims at taking part in large LGBT+ events such as EuroPride.

The aims of the European Centre-Right LGBT+ Alliance is to:

  • Advance the rights in society for LGBT+ people based on the Christian Democratic and the Centre-right concept of society and values such as freedom for persons and families, personal responsibility, dignity, and diversity
